Our Story

Hi these are some articles from long long ago

Below are some older event notices that give a sense of our history and the work we have done.

Freedom Riders Workshop

As part of the Facing the Past programme, Shikaya and Facing History and Ourselves would like to invite our teachers to a two-part workshop on a great new Grade 12 resource for teaching the US Civil Rights Movement – the Freedom Riders DVD and Facing History and Ourselves’ Democracy in Action Study Guide to accompany the documentary.

Freedom Riders tells the story of a courageous band of civil rights activists who challenged segregation, simply by travelling side by side on buses and trains through the Deep South in 1961. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, more than 400 black and white college students risked their lives—and many met with bitter racism, mob violence and imprisonment—sorely testing their belief in non-violent activism.

Democracy in Action prompts students to consider the relationship between the political context in which the Rides took place and the stories and motivations of those students who became Freedom Riders.
